SNETTERTON POLE FOR CHAMPION MASON

Reigning Champion Aaron Mason bagged his second pole position of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup season this afternoon at Snetterton, pipping his AWM/Warranty Direct team-mate Joe Fulbrook to qualifying top spot by just five-hundredths of a second.

Mason’s Scirocco will start Round 7 of the championship from the pole ahead of Fulbrook’s Golf, with Lucas Orrock’s KPM Scirocco third and Stefan Di Resta’s JWB Motorsport Scirocco next up. “The track was a lot slower today than it was yesterday in testing,” said Aaron, “and there was no grip, but I’m pleased that clearly it affected everyone else as well. Joe and I have a useful gap over the next guys.”

Orrock, who claimed his maiden podium finish last time out, at Silverstone, was delighted with his maiden competitive outing at Snetterton. “It’s my local track but because I’ve come from karting, I’ve never raced here,” said the Cambridge youngster.

The 2012 champion, James Walker, enjoyed a better time of qualifying than he did at Silverstone, posting 10th-best time in the Milltek Sport KPM Golf GTI. There was a good showing also from Wisbech-based championship newcomer Joe McMillan, whose Scirocco took 13th.

It was championship leader James Greenway’s turn to suffer this afternoon: his Scirocco was battling a mystery lack of power throughout the session and he will start 27th. “I don’t know what the problem is,” said a dejected James. “I was flying yesterday – my best time was a 2m 07s dead, and now this…”
