GREENWAY SWITCHES TO SALOON CARS FOR VW CUP CAMPAIGN

Yorkshire driver James Greenway is to follow in the wheeltracks of his father, Frank, and contest the Volkswagen Racing Cup. James, 23, is to make his saloon car debut this season at the wheel of a Scirocco R in the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup, 20 years after his dad successfully raced a Vento in the Volkswagen Vento VR6 Challenge.

James, who works in the family firm, White Rose Volkswagen of Skipton, is making the switch to the UK’s best supported one-make series after a very successful first season of single-seater action in the BRDC F4 Championship, which followed several successful seasons of European and UK Rotax karting.

“Towards the end of last year I was invited to take part in the driver evaluation programme for the Scirocco R Cup Series in Germany,” said James, “I really enjoyed driving the car, was really successful and was offered a drive and considered it seriously. But to build on our experience of last year I felt that racing in England was our best option which steered us instead to look at the Volkswagen Racing Cup.

“The VW Cup fits in perfectly with our family business which is one of the leading Volkswagen retailers in the UK. I have never raced a saloon car before but I’m feeling confident that I can make an impression from the opening round at Oulton Park in April.”

Greenway will drive a Scirocco prepared for him by AWM, reigning champion Aaron Mason’s team, and he will slot on to a grid rapidly heading for capacity size.

James’s father Frank started competing in 1980 in stage rallies, taking numerous victories. He returned to the sport after a six-year break in 1988, claiming regular race wins in National Group N Saloons driving Escort and Sierra Cosworths. His White Rose Volkswagen Vento was a regular mid-’90s sight at the sharp end of the Vento Challenge grid.

James started out in the Super 1 National Rotax Max Championship before a switch to the Rotax Max Euro Challenge in 2009. As a regular race-winner and championship contender, the following season culminated in him winning the European Rotax Winter Cup.

The opening rounds of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup are set to take place at Oulton Park on Easter Monday, 21 April. The 14-race, seven-meeting series supports the British GT Championship and is set to be televised across Europe via Motors TV.
