CLASS VICTORY IN ITALY FOR KPM ENDURANCE RACER

Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup team KPM Racing dominated from lights to chequered flag to win its class in the 12 Hours of Mugello, which finished in Italy yesterday.

For the second round of the 24 Hour Series, KPM called on drivers Tom Onslow-Cole, Paul White and Javier Morcillo, plus Milltek Sport competition winner James Walker, to pilot its purpose built Golf Mk VI TDI in the D1 (diesel touring cars up to 2000cc) class.

The squad made an impressive start to the race, completing Friday’s three-hour stint in second place in class following stints by Onslow-Cole and Morcillo. Walker went behind the wheel for the restart on Saturday, immediately settling in to his first endurance challenge and soon pulling away from the team’s rivals. White and Onslow-Cole maintained the team’s commanding class lead and pulled away to lead by 10 laps at the halfway stage. Further stints from Walker and White took the KPM Golf safely to the chequered flag, the team securing the D1 class trophy and 12th place overall.

Kevin Poole, team owner, said: “This is a mega achievement. It was a true team effort, like any endurance event, but this one ran like clockwork. The car needed nothing but tyres and fuel, and the team deserves all the credit for that. We had pace when we needed it and maintained it when our rivals couldn’t. And the drivers did exactly what they were here to do; it was a textbook day.”

“I am feeling great, but tired,” added Walker. “I managed to take about eight people on the first lap and got a great lead. To then go on to win the class is amazing. The car didn’t miss a beat for 12 hours, so all praise to KPM for an unbelievable car.”
