MASON RUNS OUT QUICKEST IN DONINGTON QUALIFYING

The scene is set for a thrilling showdown at Donington Park tomorrow with the five Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup championship title contenders claiming top-nine positions in qualifying this afternoon.

Reigning champion Aaron Mason, who is running the least success ballast of the five title hopefuls, was quickest at the wheel of his AWM/Warranty Direct Scirocco, three-quarters of a second ahead of David Sutton's SlideSports Scirocco. Mason posted two laps which were good enough for pole, and said: "I'm pleased because there was a very short window when my tyres were at their best. After I set the pole lap my times fell away and I couldn't maintain the pace."

Sutton saved his fresh Hankooks until the end of the session and pushed Jack Walker-Tully back to third on the grid with his final lap. "I'll be looking to make a good start like I did at Brands Hatch," said David, "and hopefully I can then fend them off from there."

Championship leader Joe Fulbrook was fourth quickest in his Golf, with Stefan Di Resta seventh and Lucas Orrock ninth. "I expected a bit better," said Lucas, "but I feel our race pace should be good..."
