SUTTON IN SLIDESPORTS SCIROCCO SWITCH FOR 2014 RACING CUP

Leading Volkswagen Racing Cup team SlideSports is set to field at least a three-car squad in the championship for 2014. The first SlideSports driver to be revealed is David Sutton, who announced today at the Autosport International racing car show his plans to race a SlideSports Scirocco.

SlideSports boss Mark Jenkins says his Staffordshire-based squad is ready to build on the three race victories it scored in 2013, and that Sutton is more than ready to stand on the podium’s top step: “David is an impressive talent, as he showed in his first season in the championship. He has tested our Scirocco, liked it and set some good times, and I am sure that he will be up at the front with SlideSports.

“We have two further drivers already signed – one will race a Scirocco and the other a Mk VI Golf GTI – and it is possible that we will expand to run four cars.”

Rotherham-based Sutton, 23, enjoyed a successful maiden season in the Volkswagen Racing Cup, claiming a front-row grid slot at Brands Hatch with his Team HARD Golf GTI, as well as a podium finish at Snetterton on his way to championship eighth.

“We had the speed last year, just not the luck and the reliability,” said David. “We had a few breakdowns but some highlights, like the Snetterton podium and the Brands qualifying. I’m really good friends with Ross Wylie, who won three times with SlideSports last year, and it was always on the cards that I would go with Mark for 2014. The set-up is really professional, Mark has a lot of experience, and for me it’s the best place to be.”

Sutton’s mount will be the ex-Wylie DSG semi-auto gearbox Scirocco, which he tested recently. “The test went great despite poor weather – it felt like a totally different machine to what I am used to; really good. My aim is to be up front in the championship: I have no excuses now that I am with the best team.” David’s sponsors for the coming season include Avago Karting.

The Volkswagen Racing Cup blasts back into action on Easter Monday (21 April) at the Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire, alongside the British GT Championship. Championship backers include ECM, CEVA, Hankook, Paragon and Prestige Performance Centre.
