DI RESTA JOINS JWB MOTORSPORT FOR VW CUP CAMPAIGN

Scottish talent Stefan Di Resta will race a Scirocco in this season’s Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup, it is announced today. Stefan, younger brother of DTM star and former F1 racer Paul, is to join the JWB Motorsport squad for his first full season of car racing and will make his championship debut at Oulton Park on Easter Monday (21 Apr).

Stefan, 24, will drive the Scirocco which JWB team manager Nick Beaumont had earmarked for his own use. “I’m more than happy to be stepping aside for a driver as promising as Stefan,” said Nick. “We tested him at Silverstone earlier this year and we were impressed with his pace; Stefan is going to be an asset to JWB Motorsport and we will be working hard with him to develop his full potential.”

Bathgate, West Lothian-based Di Resta is looking forward to being in the thick of things at Oulton, where the championship will boast a capacity 34-car grid: “I drove the Scirocco in the wet at Silverstone and I was very impressed – the car felt good and it all went a lot better than I had expected. This deal has all come together a bit late, but hopefully I will have a chance to test the car again in the dry before the first race.”

Although he has many kart-race outings under his belt, Stefan’s experience in cars is limited to a handful of club outings in a Mini at his home circuit of Knockhill. “I’ve been around the sport for around 10 years now but I took time out to go to university and Australia,” added Stefan. “I’m pretty much a novice really and I hope to give motorsport a good go now and see what comes of it.

“My height and weight mean that it’s time to leave karting behind, I’m older than the typical rookie and my aim for the future is GT or touring car racing, so the Volkswagen Racing Cup is an ideal place for me to get started with some affordable and competitive racing with the help of a few sponsors.”

Di Resta is stepping into a car with a pedigree; Beaumont qualified the JWB Scirocco on pole position at Brands Hatch last August and went on to win the first race of the Brands weekend.

Matt Walker, championship manager, said: “It will be great to see the Di Resta name on the side of a Scirocco in the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup this season. With a full grid including four former champions and several drivers with BTCC experience, and now Stefan taking part also, our races at Oulton Park are going to be the most exciting in years.”

The Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup will this season feature 14 races at seven British GT Championship-supporting events, including a summer outing at the Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.
